| E is for Elves. Elves first appeared in Germanic mythology and folklore. They were supernatural beings with magical powers and physical beauty who were indifferent to humans. At different times in history, Elves have been portrayed as little people and frequently associated with the forests and archery. High fantasy brought elves into prominence in fiction by writers such as Tolkien in his Lord of the Rings trilogy. Current fantasy literature has combined the powers and beauty of the original elves with the humanity of Tolkien. |
